"We take a look at the brand new Baby Audio ATOMS - a physical modeling synth based on the Mass-Spring concept.
At a basic level: The specific physical model has been turned into an instrument by Silvin Willemsen and Baby Audio. There are masses (usually balls) connected by springs (virtually of course). These are excited by a bowing action and so the masses move and the springs react.
In its simplest form these are sine waves, but with additional parameters thrown in the algorithm they become more complex.
Weird, yes and sonically pretty pleasing when process by the rest of the ATOMS voice architecture - namely, a filter and a reverberator.
What you'll find are atmospheric, organic and certainly unusual sounds that share a common ground. Its an early release, with a couple of missing things - MIDI mapping for instance, but these we suspect will soon be added.

If you’re used to working with sample libraries, Atoms will bring a new level of otherworldly realism into your tracks.
PROGRAM NEW PATCHES WITH A CLICK Atoms comes equipped with a powerful randomization engine. It’s a musically calibrated algorithm that selectively adjusts each parameter based on its relationship to the others, giving you usable patches with every roll of the dice.
You can narrow the algorithm further by limiting the random ranges for any knob or locking parameters from changing.
Finally, the Recycle button is a second randomizer that will create new patches similar to the current patch. Once you have a sound you like, click recycle to explore related options.
PHYSICALLY MODELED EFFECTS The bottom panel gives you a range of creative effects to further sculpt your sound. You can also choose between four sonic profiles, each offering a different structure of the mass-spring network simulation.
With the exception of Space (reverb), all effects in the bottom panel are created inside the physical model itself. This gives you a range of unique modulation effects that are an inherent part of the physical model and sound more natural than any separate FX chain ever would."

"I've recently finally received my playdate after more than 2 years of waiting. Besides the nice retro games, there are also a few audiovisual apps already out there, which makes the device way more exciting. First stop here is an app called Granular by Orllewin, inspired by an old Reaktor instrument called Travelizer. It is an experimental granular sampler which splits a sample (recorded via its internal mic, via external mic with trrs splitter on the headphone jack or in this case, an imported custom sample) into 5 tracks with various granular controls and separate fx.
"Granular is an experimental 'grain sampler' for Playdate that plays subsamples from a recorded parent sample, it's inspired by the old Reaktor 'Travelizer' instrument. Granular includes various modifiable parameters and effects to change the sound which produces beautiful glitchy ambience that can be used on its own or as a background for other instruments.
You really need headphones or to connect to a speaker - this will not sound good through the Playdate's tiny built-in speaker.
You don't have rigid control over the playback, most options not related to effects/filters increase or decrease the probability of something happening, either a change in playback rate, or how regular the samples are triggered, it's all fairly random.
Generally 'A' selects and navigates, 'B' closes and pops the stack back to the previous location, everything should be intuitive with a little exploration. Granular operates on probabilities; when you select 'jump' or 'rev.' (reverse) or other parameters you're telling the underlying engine to allow the possibility of that happening each cycle."
"At NAMM 2023, Sonic State met with Brian and Noah from Mntra Instruments to discuss MDALA 2 and the suite of instruments it controls. MDLA 2 is an audio engine that uses ultrasonically sampled sound, based on the principle of game audio, where everything is reactive based on complex real-time parameter controls. One control can quickly lead to a lot of expression, which would normally take many passes of automation to happen.
MNDALA 2, which is free to download, is needed to use their instruments, such as Atma, which is based on sacred sounds like sampled bells and all kinds of instruments from all over the world. Arca is their strings library, and they currently have eleven different instruments available on their website, two of which are free to use.

"So I was planning to do a Tera Pro video this week just, well, just because. There were a good number of things that took me a while to either figure out, or perhaps just to notice, so I've been thinking of doing not a demo and not a tutorial, but more of a tour. But then they released the BrainZ module as an add-on, based on the Mutable Instruments Plaits module, that you can add to Tera Pro. So I did a tour of the basics of the BrainZ module instead, and I'll do a more general tour at a later date.
So the good part is that BrainZ adds a ton of options to Tera Pro. It's got 16 different synth models, and a good number of controls for them. Basically I set up an 8-step sequence and let it run while I went through each of the different models. So, true confession, I recorded the video, edited it, put in the labels, and only when it was more or less done was when I realized I'd gone through the models row by row, whereas the manual goes through one column and then down the next. Totally my fault! And hopefully I'm not going to confuse everyone. At least I noticed and was able to change the labels so they'd be correct. But to make matters worse, I skipped one! (15. Analog Snare Drum Model.) No idea why, but thankfully at least the one I skipped I used in my demo patch, so you at least get to hear it. Honestly I was wondering what all those crazy icons meant, and it turns out they make sense, and some of them are related to each other (the drum ones, for instance). So remember kids, read the manual first and then make your video.
Note that there's a lot more capability in BrainZ than I've shown here as I've only done some basic modulation. There's more in it than I've shown.
I totally recommend Tera Pro, and I have both of the optional add-ons (the other one being the Waves wavetable module). Once you wrap your head around the perhaps slightly unusual user interface it makes a lot of sense, and making your own patches can be very rewarding once you've gotten comfortable with it.

"In this video I demonstrate the full functionality of KALYKE by IO Instruments. KALYKE is a digital module that can be a dual envelope, an ADSR envelope and an LFO or a dual LFO, it really depends on how you set it up. There's a lot of versatility to explore with this 16HP piece of gear. I've recorded a bunch of patch and sound examples, and of course a long segment where I go over every knob, button, input and output.
IO Instruments aim at lower budgets without sacrificing quality. I think you'll see that KALYKE is indeed feature packed and it has a few tricks up its sleeve that I haven't seen on any other envelope or LFO module.

"Back with Uwe Geroge and one of his other ventures, this time IO Instruments and the KAL IYKE function generator. With an envelope - which can loop, and LFO which can be one shot, its pretty flexible. Some other cools functions, musical x1, x2 buttons, freeze function, ratchet together with plenty of CV connectivity, it has a lot of utility.
